1. How much does it cost to adopt a pet at the Story County Animal Shelter?

Spayed or neutered dog $35.00. Spayed or neutered cat $30.00

2. How do I adopt an animal from the Story County Animal Shelter

Once you have decided you would like to adopt an animal from us an adoption request form must be submitted.  You may fill this out in person at our facility or over the phone with shelter personnel. Please allow us time to review applications before adoption.  Because of the adoption process we do not do same day adoptions.

3. How can I help a neglected or abused pet?

Step 1 - Evaluate the Situation. Is the animal being physically abused or being denied food and shelter?
Step 2 - Report it. Contact your local law enforcement agency or the Animal Control at 515-382-3338.
Step 3 - Prevent it. Educate friends and neighbors about the responsibilities of pet ownership.

4. How to find a lost pet?

Make sure your pet is tagged or chipped. Take immediate action and don't wait for the pet to return home. Familiarize yourself with specific information about the physical characteristics of your pet like color, patterns, weight and sex. Contact local humane societies with a description of your lost pet and a phone number to contact you. Blanket the area the pet went missing with flyers. Use social media like Facebook and Twitter, and contact local radio stations.

5. Will the animal I adopt have any vaccines and be neutered or spayed?

All dogs and cats that are adopted have to be spayed and neutered before they go to their new home.  We also give them their distemper shots, worming, and flea and tick treatment.  Dogs are also given a bordetella vaccine.
