[ARCHIVED] NOTICE: Skunk River Water Trail Impassible due to fallen trees

Skunk River winds with blue sky and green trees lining both sides

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Monday, July 7, 2025

The South Skunk River Water Trail is currently impassable immediately downstream of Lincoln Way, in Ames. Large Cottonwoods on both sides of the river have fallen into each other causing a large obstruction with no viable ways to navigate around the trees.

Users are strongly encouraged not to travel south of the River Valley Park Access (227) due to this obstruction. This is likely not the only hazard along the Skunk River Water Trail due to the recent heavy rain and wind. River travelers should be vigilant while enjoying all rivers in central Iowa.

Story County Conservation will post updates as they happen.

The South Skunk River Water Trail includes 33 mi. of river with 11 total access points, 8 of which are managed by Story County Conservation. It was designated as a State Water Trail by the Iowa DNR in 2020.
