[ARCHIVED] Plan Ahead and Save: Apply for Your Passport Now

In anticipation of holiday and Spring Break international travel, the Story County Recorder’s office is offering an extra day of passport application acceptance on Saturday, November 5th for those who can’t make it into the office during regular business hours. The event will be held at the Story County Recorder’s Office, 900 6th St. in Nevada. The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. and applications will be accepted from all applicants who arrive by 1:00 p.m. To ensure agent availability, please call (515) 382-7230 to make an appointment. Walk-in customers will be accommodated as time permits.

Passport Services is expecting an increase in passport applications through 2018, and is encouraging customers to apply as early as possible to avoid problems with receiving their passports. Applying during the off-peak months (August through December) can help ensure that an application is processed well within the four to six week service commitment for routine requests, and thus avoid paying the extra $60 fee for expedited processing that may become necessary during peak season months (January through July).

Anyone planning to apply must appear in person, including children. Applicants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by both parents. All applicants must provide proof of citizenship and photo identification, preferably a driver’s license. A passport photo is also required for each applicant. Photos can be taken in our office for $10 or one can be obtained off-site provided it meets State Department guidelines. Parents applying with children will each be required to provide their photo identification for each child applying. Passport applications will be available the day of the event or they can be completed, but not signed, in advance of the event. Payment for the passport must be in the form of a check or money order. A separate $25 application fee can be paid with check, money order, cash, or Mastercard/Visa. A service fee will be added to debit or credit card purchases. Due to limited cash on-hand, the Recorder’s office requests that you bring exact change if possible.

Passport forms, passport fees, and a list of required materials can be found at the Department of State’s official website, travel.state.gov. We strongly encourage you to call our office at (515) 382-7230 if you have any questions regarding this event.
