  1. Story County Step Out Into Summer

    We’ve created an online family challenge that will take you from your home and into your county parks, and it kicks off May 28! Summer is almost here and we want to encourage you to get outside and explore, have some fun, and gain points while doing it! Here’s how to play: 1. Download the GooseChase app (it’s free!) 2. Create your team name 3. Search for Story County Step Out into Summer 4. Start earning points by completing missions to win a $50 gift certificate to JAX Sporting Goods! Sign-up starts May 15, and the challenge begins May 28. New missions will be posted each Friday. your team will have until July 5 to complete as many missions as you can.

  2. Summer Skills: River Canoeing

    June 30, 2021, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
    To be determined based on river levels

    Explore a local river by canoe. Campers must have prior canoe experience. Parents will be notified of drop off and pick-up locations, as SCC WILL Not be able to provide transportation. Bring sack lunch, water bottle, clothes that can be wet and muddy, sunglasses/hat, sunscreen, and water shoes (no flip flops). All equipment will be provided. Location is currently TBD, but it is likely to be Skunk River in Ames, or Boone Waterworks in Boone. Put-in location and take-out spot will be provided as we get closer to the camp date. This camp is for children who have completed grades 6 & up in the spring of 2021. Registration begins May 3rd at 6 pm. ands closes on June 16th at 4 pm.

  3. Backpacking Basics

    Have you always wanted to try backpacking but didn’t know where to start? Come and explore the gear needed, get your questions answered, and build confidence in this popular outdoor rec activity. Please bring water, a snack, and dress for the weather. Masks are recommended. We will also be hiking for a short period of time. No prior experience needed, and we'll have all the gear needed for use that day. This program is intended for age 16 and above.
