  1. FLOAT I (Basic Outdoor Skills)

    The first of the FLOATs (Fun-Loving Outdoor Adventure Team) teaches campers basic outdoor skills while preparing for the higher level FLOATs. Fishing, canoeing, map reading, cooking, and other skills will be taught. This camp is only for children that are completing 3rd or 4th grade in the spring of 2019. Children may only be registered for one FLOAT I camp. Registration begins on Saturday, April 13 at 8:00 a.m.

    Let's GO outside and PLAY! Celebrate National Get Outdoors Day by exploring your parks. Try canoeing, wildlife watching, fort building, fishing, pond and insect nets, building mason bee houses, geocaching, creek walking, and more! First time trying a skill? No worries: we'll welcome you with friendly staff and volunteers to get your started, share our favorite spots to explore, and provide all the tools needed (canoes, fishing poles, binoculars, GPS units, nets, etc.) Skunk River Paddlers will lead canoeing, Ames Area Amateur Astronomers will open the observatory at McFarland Park. Ready, set, GO! Free. No registration required. No fishing license required; it's free fishing weekend! Co-sponsored by ISU Extension and Outreach, Story County Extension and Outreach, and Iowa Young Birders. This event will be canceled if there is unsafe weather (thunderstorms).

  3. Polliwogs: Fur, Feathers, Fliers, & Fins

    Children explore what makes each animal special, whether they have fur, feathers, fliers, or fins. On the last day, we'll venture to the lake with nets, so be prepared to get wet and dirty! This camp is only for children that will be starting kindergarten in the fall of 2019. Children must be 5 years of age by August 1, 2019 in order to attend. This camp runs Monday, June 10 - Thursday, June 13. Camp will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 11:30 a.m. daily. Parents are not allowed to stay with children (we require background checks on each person that is around children). Registration begins on Saturday, April 13 at 8:00 a.m.

  7. TEAM (Trail Enhancement and Management) Day

    June 15, 2019, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM @ Soper's Mill (North and South)

    Be a part of our TEAM and help make improvements to county trail systems. All volunteers are asked to wear long sleeves, pants, and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Bring work gloves and a water bottle. Registration is required the Thursday prior to ensure enough tools and refreshments for everyone. This TEAM Day will involve trail trimming at Soper's Mill North.

    Fun-Loving Outdoor Adventure Team (FLOAT) II teaches a variety of outdoor skills. Campers build self-confidence in camping and canoeing and spend the night exploring McFarland Park. This is outdoor play in the best way! This overnight camp is for youth completing 5th or 6th grade in the spring of 2019. Camp begins on ?Thursday, June 20 at 9:00 a.m. and ends on ?Friday, June 21 at 9:00 a.m. Registration begins on Saturday, April 13 at 8:00 a.m. Adding your child to the waiting list prior to April 13 will not hold a place for them. Activities include child-lead hikes, digging in the mud, searching for nature treasures, climbing, books, songs, and an abundance of nature-inspired play. Programs are free! Registration is required the Tuesday prior to each program. These programs are intended for children 18 months to 5 years old plus their adult. Be dressed to be outside no matter the weather and be prepared to get messy! Older/younger siblings are welcome to attend.

    Join Dr. Thomas Rosburg on monthly prairie walks at the largest prairie remnant in Story County. See rare and common prairie flora that change each month and learn about the history and ecology of central Iowa prairies. Long pants, sturdy shoes, and bug spray are recommended. Walks are family-friendly but not stroller-friendly. Walks will be canceled in the event of inclement weather (thunderstorms). These walks are free, and no registration is required.

  17. Tedesco Environmental Learning Corridor Grand Opening

    June 28, 2019, 3:00 PM - 6:30 PM @ Tedesco Environmental Learning Corridor

    Celebrate this unique community space located in the ISU Research Park. This 37-acre park brings county, city, university, and state partners together to illustrate synergies between commercial development, quality of life improvements, and natural resource conservation. The Grand Opening will begin with a social hour with remarks and dedication ceremony to follow. Then we'll cut the ribbon and enjoy ice cream from Sweet Treats Ice Cream Company, music from the The Fabulous Irregulars, guided tours led by those directly involved with the construction, and children's activities.
