Sex Offender Residency Requirements

Implementation of the 2,000 ft. rule has begun in Story County. We believe some clarification is in order to ensure that this process runs as smoothly as possible. When looking a sex offender’s address up on the maps it is important to pay special attention to the color of the circle affecting that particular sex offender. The colors will be:

  • Red: This day care or school was in existence before July 1, 2002
  • Yellow: This day care or school came into existence after July 1, 2002

This distinction is important! If there is a yellow circle surrounding the individual’s residence then the dates must be checked. If a sex offender moved to the residence after July 1, 2002 and the day care facility or school was established/registered after July 1, 2002, then the first in time wins; i.e., if sex offender moves in on December 2, 2004, and a day care is registered on December 3, 2004, the sex offender is not in violation and may stay where he / she is.

Remember, if a sex offender moved to his / her residence before July 1, 2002, then the law will not apply to him / her.

Checking the Dates

If an individual established his/her residence after July 1, 2002, and they are in a yellow area:

  • Get the following information from the sex offender:
    • Address
    • The date which they began living at their current residence
    • Telephone number
  • Until given further notice, contact Travis S. Johnson at the Story County Attorneys Office at (515) 382-7255. Once the software is in place, the Sheriff’s Office will be contacted with this information.

The Story County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Office of Story County Planning and Zoning, have provided these maps as a guide only for use to locate the restricted areas in Story County pursuant to the 2,000 ft. rule. Anyone affected by the 2,000 ft rule must check with the Story County Sheriff’s Office before entering into any purchase or rental / lease agreement to ascertain if the prospective residence is compliance with the 2000 ft. rule. You may call during business hours (8 AM - 5 PM Monday-Friday) at (515) 382-6566 to check addresses.

Any information from the Story County Sheriff’s Office and the Story County Office of Planning and Zoning reference the 2,000 ft. rule is not a guarantee. Story County does not warrant the information and will not reimburse a purchaser or renter in the event they locate within the 2,000 ft. rule based on the information Story County provides.
