Update from the Recorder's Office

The Recorder's Office is now accepting walk-in customers.  Appointments are required for passport applications.

  • Story County Recorder’s Office will be following CDC guidelines

Overview

This office serves as a repository for many public records, including land transactions which document title to property. We work with the Iowa Department of Public Health to provide certified copies of births that occurred in Story County, marriage certificates for license applications submitted in Story County, and death certificates from anywhere in Iowa. Working in conjunction with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, we register and title recreational vehicles such as boats, snowmobiles, ATVs, and ORVs, as well as issuing hunting and fishing licenses. We are also a passport acceptance facility for those wishing to travel outside the United States.

Land Record Searches

Land record searches are available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and real estate documents may be recorded electronically through that portal. We are working to convert our historical paper records to electronic records and make them available for internet searching after they have been redacted to remove sensitive personal information.

We will continue to use technology to make the office more accessible to the public.
