The Board convenes their formal meeting for public hearings and approvals of claims at 10:00 AM each Tuesday morning. The public is invited and participation is encouraged for these meetings.

The Board of Supervisors is the administrative and legislative branch of the County, composed of three members. They are responsible for the following aspects of County business:
  • Approve bonds and reports
  • County budget administration
  • County policy administration
  • Economic development
  • Fill employee vacancies
  • Set county tax levy

The Board seeks gender balance on all Boards and Commissions and would like to encourage citizens who may be interested in serving on a Board or Commission to complete an application that can be kept on file.

Vacancies for Boards and Commissions

Officials are seeking applications for a vacant County Planning and Zoning Commission seat. Story County Board of Supervisors will appoint a resident to a new five year term, ending December 31, 2019.  Additional Commission membership information.

Veterans Affairs is seeking a Veteran willing to serve as County Commissioner of Veterans Affairs

The Story County Commission of Veterans Affairs has a total of three commissioners. Each year starting in July one will serve as the chair, secretary and member. The chair runs the monthly meetings and is the point of contact for the office staff.

Duties entail a monthly meeting held on the first Tuesday of the month from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm to review County expenditures for veteran’s assistance and to receive a monthly report from the Director of Veterans Affairs, additional monthly meeting on occasion and four meetings per year with the Board of Supervisors. Compensation for this position is $50 per month plus mileage to and from the meetings. 

Annual state VA training is required for each Commissioner to attend and is normally held in Des Moines in the fall of each year. Compensation for this training is $50 plus mileage reimbursement.

Iowa Code 35B section 69.16A Gender Balance requires preference be given to applicants so that the Commission is gender balanced.
