Selling or Trading Your Vehicle to a Dealer
Policies and Procedures for Selling or Trading to a Dealer
Keep your plates.  Before leaving your vehicle with the dealer, remove your license plates. Then:
  • If you are trading for another vehicle (or purchase one within 30 days), upon payment of registration fees, you can put the plates on your replacement vehicle as long as they are in the same plate classification.
  • If you are not replacing the vehicle you sold, turn the plates in to the Story County Treasurers Office.

You may be entitled to a refund or credit of the unused portion of registration fees paid on the vehicle you sold to the dealer. So:
  • If you are trading (or purchase another vehicle within 30 days) and wish to receive credit toward the registration fees, fill out the bottom of your registration receipt for the sold vehicle and submit it with the application for title to your replacement vehicle. Note: must be done within 30 days of sale.
  • If you are not replacing the sold vehicle and wish to receive a refund, complete the bottom of your registration receipt and submit both the plates and registration to the County Treasurers Office. Note: To receive a refund, this must be done within six months of selling your vehicle. The state will not issue refunds for less than $10.

Title Paperwork
Dealers are very helpful in guiding you through the following steps:
  • Complete the "Assignment of Title" on the back of the title and give it to the dealer.
  • Tell the dealer the county in which your vehicle was last registered and the date your vehicle registration expires.
  • Complete a damage disclosure statement and give to the dealer.
  • If purchasing a replacement vehicle, give the dealer your registration receipt.
  • If not purchasing a replacement vehicle, keep your registration receipt.
