For Immediate Release: July 1, 2011

Ames, IA -- Story County residents now have a new tool to keep their communities safe and help law enforcement solve crimes. On July 1, the Story County Crime Stoppers Board launched its phone line and online service to solicit anonymous tips.

Crime Stoppers is a national organization that offers cash rewards for information that helps lead to an arrest and conviction in a case. Until now, such a program did not exist in Story County. A volunteer board of community members spent the past 18 months working to make it a reality.

"We are very fortunate to have a relatively low crime rate in Story County. Starting a Crime Stoppers program will ensure that it stays low. This will be a wonderful adjunct to the already stellar law enforcement agencies in our area. Crime Stoppers is a program that needs to be in place before you really need it. If our crime rate remains low, Crime Stoppers will emphasize youth education and crime prevention," said Craig Grandgenett, Crime Stoppers Board Vice Chair.

The community-run board is operating the Crime Stoppers program with the full support of all law enforcement agencies in Story County.

"The emergence of this program in our area fills a void for those of us investigating crimes by giving an outlet to individuals who have information on crimes but who would otherwise not come forward. This program has proven its value all over the United States and I'm confident it will ultimately make all the communities in Story County a safer place to live," said Capt. Barry Thomas, Chief Deputy with the Story County Sheriff's Office.

Now that the program is up and running, the board is working to secure the funding to maintain its operation and to offer as cash rewards. Donations can be made online or at the mailing address below.

The Crime Stoppers phone line will be answered 24-7 and tips can also be made at online or by text message. All tips will remain anonymous. The Story County Crime Stoppers Board is a non-profit organization of private citizens.
