Spring Road Conditions

As warmer weather arrives, the melting of snow and spring rains saturates the upper layer of material on the gravel road system. This soft layer is then disturbed by traffic, causing rapid deterioration of the road surface. The frost was pushed much deeper this year and it will take more time for the roads to dry out. The deep frost is also causing widespread frost boils which push up bumps in the roadway. These locations are too soft to support our maintenance equipment so we will have to wait for the frost boils to dry out before we blade them or we could make them worse. We are currently out blading and hauling rock to roads that can support our equipment but it could be many days or weeks before the roads return to normal depending on the weather. Please use extra caution when traveling on gravel roads this spring. To see pictures of some frost boils we are experiencing, please click on the link below. This is happening state-wide, so please stay aware when you are out. Thank you.
